At 15, Derek won a silver medal for Team USA at the 1998 World Youth Games in Moscow. A 4× national champion and #2-ranked Junior Foilist in the country, he earned a full scholarship to Notre Dame, reached #12 in the world in Junior Foil, and was a 2003 NCAA champion. He has spent 20+ years coaching at Chaminade College Preparatory, leading the program to 7 consecutive Combined Overall High School State Championships and 7 consecutive Men's Foil Team High School State Championships.
Derek was shaped by two legends of American fencing: Reverend Lawrence Calhoun, who invented the Junior Olympics for fencing, and Misha Itkin, a former USA national coach whose son Nick Itkin is currently ranked #6 in the world in Men's Foil. Under their guidance he became a 4× national champion, earned his first "A" rating in foil on his 15th birthday, earned his second "A" rating in épée before his junior year in high school, and holds the California High School State Championship individual record at 42-0.
At 15 years old, Derek stepped onto the piste in Moscow representing the United States at the 1998 World Youth Games — the closest thing to the Olympics that existed for young athletes — and walked away with a silver medal in Men's Team Épée.
Derek represented the U.S.A. three times on Junior World Championship teams (1999, 2000 & 2002). He went to Moscow for épée in 1998 but made every Junior World team for foil — at his peak, ranked top 5 nationally in both weapons in his age bracket.
He reached #12 in the world for Junior Men's Foil in 2001, finishing 3rd at the Junior World Cup in London and 7th in Madrid in back-to-back weekends — while battling a serious illness throughout both tournaments that required an emergency tonsillectomy and a three-week hospitalization upon returning to the U.S. In April 2000, he earned a bronze medal (3rd place) at an Open NAC in Cleveland, Ohio — competing against adult fencers as a high schooler. He competed at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing 9th in Men's Foil. His highest national ranking was 2nd in Junior Men's Foil (2002). In 2001, after not fencing épée nationally for nearly two years, he entered the Junior Olympics in Men's Junior Épée and finished 2nd, losing in the final to the #1-ranked fencer in the country — who became his future Notre Dame teammate. His overall Chaminade high school fencing record was 1,915 wins, 542 losses (.779 winning percentage).
Derek was inducted into the Chaminade Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011. His fencing jacket was retired after graduation and hangs in the foyer of the Chaminade High School gym.
Since graduating from Notre Dame, Derek has served as Head Coach at Chaminade College Preparatory, coaching 6th through 12th grade in both foil and epee. Under his leadership the program has won 7 consecutive Combined Overall High School State Championships (2017-2026) and 7 consecutive Men's Foil Team High School State Championships (2017-2026).
Derek has coached fencers who have reached the top 8 at USA National Championships, developing competitive athletes who perform at the highest levels of the sport. His commitment to his fencers extends beyond the local strip — he has traveled internationally to coach and support his athletes at competitions abroad.
His coaching perspective was enriched by working with elite coaches from Notre Dame, Stanford, Princeton, Penn State, Ohio State, and international coaches from Ukraine, France, Hungary, Russia, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, and beyond.

Club coaches remember the tournament. Derek breaks it down. Your coach watches 15 fencers at the tournament and recalls the big moments. Derek sits with your fencer's footage, pauses every touch, and gives you a tactical breakdown you can rewatch before the next competition. It doesn't replace club training — it adds the layer your opponents aren't getting.
Every review covers the areas that matter most for your fencer's level — from the fundamentals all the way to elite-level pattern recognition:
